PINK

PINK

Yes, that is a shout. I hate pink. I have two older brothers and two sons - I don't *do* pink. My hair is red(ish) and pink is just a disaster on me - and I don't like the colour so pink just doesn't happen in my house.

Then Orla was born. Suddenly the house was filled with this seeping marsh of pink. It was vile - pink everywhere. Every time she was bought clothes or given hand-me-downs it was pink.

It's taken me a little over two years to weed it all out.

Gradually over the last few weeks Orla has been getting more and more demanding with what she wears. This morning really was the end of the line. She refused every pair of trousers in the draw:
"No. Pink."
She wants pink trousers - but she doesn't have any.

So - I gave in - and we went shopping.

And the picture shows the haul. She was most excited about the pink boots which she refused to take off and she had to stand on the checkout desk and get her feet scanned when I was buying it all.

So expect to see pics of pink, girlie Orla from now.

I feel sick.

  1. This has been the subject of a huge discussion both at Kindy and my my course online discusison... the peer pressure, marketing and the (we hope!) unthinking comments of adults about colour and gender stereotypes has an enormous impact on the kids.

One of my colleagues is putting together a research proposal looking into parental attitudes/influences on gender stereotyping and does lean towards the pinkness of little girls being due to parents giving in to sterotypes, rather than giving in to their children... I'll send her the link to this!

I was visiting a new children's shop a few weeks ago and every single piece of girls clothing was pink or had pink on it!

Maybe you could compromise on pink flowers on something or pink and xxxx stripes?

However I do remember a certain little boy who wouldn't wear any colour but yellow socks for a while, so maybe it's not that surprising eh? Just a pity about her choice of colour =/

    A xxx
