Wind Farm Open Day

It's been a while since I blogged. Can you believe it's October already - time is flying.

It's half-term here this week and today is a lazy day. We had a busy day yesterday - more of that later and perhaps more on Ruaridh's blog too.

What I really wanted to tell you about was our visit to the local Wind Farm.

It was a great day. There were fliers and posters all around the village and local town and so many people said they were going to go. The school went along earlier in the week with the eco-group and they seemed to ahve a great time although none of my kids went. The flier told of a free lunch - so over 800 people showed up - fantastic!! They ran out of burgers and had to go off and buy 300 more!!

There was a big marquee with lots of information about the Wind Farm and its 16 turbines. There was face painting:

There was a bouncy castle and a few stalls. Best of all was a tractor ride (a tractor pulling a large trailer with hay bales in it to sit on) that took you right up under one of the turbines. I have always loved wind farms - I think they are stunning - and to see them up close was a real treat. Once at the turbine Martin got off and walked back so he could take a whole load of photos.

The windmill is 80metres tall with each blade being 45metres long - giving a total height of 125metres - fantastic!

All in all a great afternoon out - all three children were buzzing and telling us how good it was. I wonder how many turbines it would take to get rid of our local nuclear power station....

Photos, as ever, taken from Martin's Flickr account.

  1. I love wind farms too - so stately and elegant - and useful too!
