Moving house in a blizzard

Wow - three months since I last blogged. Naughty blogger ;-)

Since I last blogged - we have moved house (in a blizzard) and had a whole heap of problems and changes.

This is what we woke up to the day after we moved in.

As you can imagine there was *no way* the removal van was going to get anywhere near the house. You'll notice Martin's car is not there - that's because it got snowed in down the road - being an automatic - it is terrible in the snow.

So we had no removal van for TWO WEEKS because of the snow, ice, Christmas and New Year. Actually - it was good fun. Fortunately for us we had got the keys the week before we moved in and spent one night over the weekend here. (We couldn't move when we got the keys as we wanted the boys to finish the term at the old house and then Ruaridh had a birthday and Martin had an exam... so it was the 22nd we moved out and in theory the 23rd we would move in.) The night we spent here over the weekend we filled the cars with things like sheets, duvets, Christmas presents (phew) and other things. We left all the dirty washing here and camped out. Another bit of luck (which we are now cursing) is that the landlord left half their furniture here. Which means we had beds, sofa, chairs, kitchen stuff, a washing machine, tumble drier.... Now we have all our stuff back it is a complete pain as we have so many duplicates and nowhere to put it all. We have a lot less bookcases so we have boxes and boxes of books in the garage. We have had to keep some stuff in storage as we simply have no space for it all.

So not the smoothest of moves - along with problems at the old house that we didn't get chance to sort out as the weather made driving anywhere so dangerous. Even now in early March we still have snow and ice on the ground. It has been a hard, cold winter. The temperatures were so low that the snow just piled up and up on itself. The drainpipes fell off the house, tiles were damaged, the garage door broke, the outside thermometer fell to pieces - not fun.

Anyway - the boys started at the new school and seem to be getting along mostly okay. It hasn't been easy for them. Morgan is struggling to make new friends but he has finally started talking about people which is a good sign. He is now obsessed with reading and reads late into the night. Ruaridh's transition was not so smooth but his new teacher is getting to know him and is finding some strategies that help him. I have a meeting with the school to discuss his progress next week. Orla should have started nursery in January but they lost her forms! So she will start after Easter now. She is more than ready for it. I think we are starting to drive each other nutty being together all the time in the week.

Finally now in March we can start to see some signs of Spring through the snow. I think we are all looking forward to being out more and getting to know the area. I've spotted a few parks and open spaces for us to explore. I want to get us all onto bikes. Orla is getting a bike for her birthday (in fact we pick it up tomorrow) so that should help with the school run. Ruaridh loves scooting to school (when there is no snow) and Morgan seems to like just walking - especially as one of his new friends goes the same way as us.

I'll update more soon as there is a lot going on with the boys and assessments....
